Convenient Telehealth Counseling Across Illinois
Our secure telehealth services let you access counseling from the comfort of home, removing barriers like travel and scheduling so you can focus on what matters most — your well-being.
Helping Families and Teens Build Healthier Relationships
Our counselors support families and teens in building stronger, healthier relationships. Family sessions in Illinois are with Jaime Doss, LCPC, who also sees children and teens, by secure video. We help families improve communication, rebuild trust, and navigate life’s transitions together.
Narcissistic Abuse and Codependency Recovery in Illinois
Two of the things Chicago clients ask us about most often arrive together: recovering from a relationship with someone whose behavior followed a narcissistic pattern, and the codependent habits that either preceded it or grew out of it. Almost everyone opens by undercutting themselves. They were not hit. It was not that bad. That hedging is not modesty, it is the residue of years of having your version of events corrected.
The useful early question is not whether the other person meets a diagnostic threshold, which you are not in a position to determine and which does not change what you experienced. It is what happened to your own read on what is true, and how far you now go to avoid a reaction. Early sessions are largely about rebuilding trust in your own account, often by going back over specific incidents in detail rather than in summary. Where contact continues, through children or shared work, a good part of each session goes to practical strategy for that, which is a different problem from processing something finished.
Trauma, PTSD and EMDR in Illinois
Where something older sits underneath the present difficulty, we use trauma-focused approaches including EMDR, which in Illinois is with Lisa Abrotsky, LMFT, by secure video. The premise is that some memories do not get filed properly and stay stored with their original sensory charge intact, which is why a smell or a tone of voice can put you back there with the same heart rate you had at the time. EMDR works on the storage rather than on the narrative, so you do not have to describe the event in detail, repeatedly, to a stranger.
The early sessions are preparation and are not optional: history, and building the capacity to come back down from distress before anything is opened up. Where someone is in active crisis, or where daily life is too unstable to absorb the work between sessions, stabilization comes first and reprocessing waits.
Our EMDR therapy in Chicago page covers how the eight-phase protocol runs, what the preparation phase involves and when we would hold off.
Anxiety and Depression in Illinois
The version of anxiety we see most often in Chicago does not look like anxiety from the outside. It looks like someone performing well, holding down a demanding role, answering messages late, who cannot sit still and sleeps badly. Nothing has fallen apart, which is exactly why it goes untreated for years. Depression alongside it rarely means being unable to get out of bed. More often it is flatness: the work still gets done, and what has gone is any sense that it is worth doing.
Treatment is practical rather than open-ended. Cognitive behavioral work goes after the thinking that keeps the alarm running, and behavioral activation works out which one or two things are worth putting back into the week first. More on how this works in the city is on our page about depression counseling in Chicago.
Perinatal and Postpartum Therapy in Illinois
The first year with a baby is rarely the year people are told to expect. Sleep goes. The body is still healing. And the feelings that show up — flatness, dread, irritability, a constant low hum of worry about the baby — often have nothing to do with how much you wanted this child. Postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety are common, they are treatable, and neither one means you are failing at any part of this.
We work with new and expecting parents throughout Illinois, by secure telehealth anywhere in the state. Telehealth matters more here than almost anywhere else in our work: getting across the city to an appointment with a newborn is genuinely hard, and a session you can take from your own couch while the baby naps is a session you will actually keep.
What parents bring to us varies more than the label “postpartum depression” suggests. Some describe a mood that has flattened out — no joy, no interest, a sense of going through the motions of care. Others describe the opposite: a nervous system that will not stand down, racing thoughts, intrusive images of something happening to the baby, a body that stays braced even when the house is quiet. Intrusive thoughts in particular frighten people into silence, and they are far more common than most parents realize. Naming them out loud to someone who is not alarmed by them is often where the relief starts.
We also see parents whose birth did not go the way it was supposed to — an emergency delivery, a long stretch in the NICU, a moment where someone was genuinely frightened. That is trauma, and it responds to trauma treatment. We use EMDR (with Lisa, by secure video) and trauma-informed approaches for exactly this, so the memory stops arriving unbidden every time you tell the story.
And we work with the losses that get less room to be grieved: miscarriage, stillbirth, and the long uncertainty of fertility treatment. There is often no funeral and no obvious language for any of it, which leaves people carrying it privately. Therapy can be the one place it gets to be as big as it actually is.
Alongside the clinical picture there is the ordinary weight of the change itself — the identity shift, the strain on a relationship, the isolation of long days alone with an infant. We see new parents individually and as couples for that work, by secure video anywhere in Illinois.
Our postpartum depression counseling in Chicago page goes further into what the first appointment covers, partners and birth trauma, and coordinating with your OB.
What a First Session Looks Like
There is no wrong way to arrive and you do not need to have worked out what the problem is first. Most of the first appointment is history and current picture: what brought you now rather than a year ago, what has already been tried, and what you would need to see for this to feel worth continuing. If trauma work is likely, we will be honest about pacing rather than promising speed. By the end you should have a sense of direction and a plan for the next few sessions. If we are not the right fit we will say so and help you find someone who is.
Where in Illinois We Work
Our Illinois office address is 605 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611, on the Magnificent Mile; it is an office address, not an in-person option.
Clients join us by video from Chicago and across the metro area, including Evanston, Oak Park, Naperville, Schaumburg and the North Shore, and from across the state. One rule comes from licensure rather than from us: for a video session you need to be physically inside Illinois at the time, because our Illinois clinicians are licensed here. Home, a parked car or a private room at work all count.
Insurance, Fees and Getting Started
In Illinois we’re in network with Aetna, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois is out of network. We do not accept Medicare or Medicaid. If you are paying privately, an individual session is $125 and a couples or family session is $175, each 45 to 50 minutes, and an extended 90-minute individual, couples or EMDR session is $200 to $250. Telehealth coverage in Illinois is generally the same as for an in-office appointment, and our team will verify your benefits before the first session, in network or out.
How out-of-network benefits work
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois is out of network, but you can still use your benefits. You pay for each session when you have it, and we give you a superbill (an itemized receipt with the codes your insurer needs) after every appointment. You send it to your insurance company, and they pay you back based on your plan’s out-of-network deductible and coinsurance. Before you start, call the number on your card and ask about your “outpatient mental health, out-of-network” benefits, or ask us to verify them for you. You can also pay with an HSA or FSA card. Our out-of-network reimbursement guide walks through the numbers and exactly what to ask your insurer.
The practical step is a short phone conversation to describe what is going on and be matched with a clinician licensed in Illinois. Call (312) 820-6525 or use the contact form.
Common Questions from Illinois Clients
How quickly can I be seen?
It depends on the fit rather than the calendar. Matching you with the right clinician matters more than the earliest available slot, so the first call is partly about working out who that is.
How long does therapy usually take?
There is no set number of sessions. A focused piece of work on a specific anxiety usually moves faster than longstanding patterns or anything with trauma underneath. You should have a reasonable estimate after the first sessions rather than being left to guess.
Are Illinois sessions in person or by video?
By secure video anywhere in Illinois. We do not see clients in person in Illinois at this time.
Where We Work
We see clients in person in Wellington, Florida, and Cary, North Carolina (Cary’s in-person times are currently full, so new clients there start by video), and by secure video across eleven states: Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
You can read about the clinicians you would be working with on our therapists page, or call the Chicago office at (312) 820-6525.
