Grief Counseling in New Jersey, Online
All of our New Jersey grief counseling happens by secure video, so you can talk about a loss from your own home, wherever you are in the state, from Bergen County to Cape May. You need to be physically in New Jersey at the time of each session. If you’re grieving and don’t know where to start, you’re in the right place.
To start, contact us or check your insurance. Grief counseling in New Jersey sits alongside our grief and loss, individual therapy, family therapy, trauma and EMDR therapy and psychiatry and medication management services. We offer grief counseling in New Jersey, North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania and Colorado, plus five more states (full list below).
After Years of Caregiving
Some losses come at the end of a long stretch of appointments, medication schedules and nights spent listening for a call. When the person you cared for dies, the grief often arrives mixed with relief, guilt about the relief, and a strange emptiness where the routine used to be. You may have been grieving for years already. Counseling gives that whole experience room, including the parts that are hard to say out loud.
When Grief Doesn’t Look Like Sadness
Grief doesn’t always show up as tears. For many people in New Jersey who reach out to us, it looks like:
- Racing thoughts, or a constant sense that something else will go wrong
- Exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix
- Irritability with the people who are trying to help
- Throwing yourself into work so there’s no quiet time
- Feeling numb, then guilty for feeling numb
If any of that sounds familiar, it may be grief, even if the loss was months or years ago.
How We Help
There is no right way to grieve and no set number of sessions. Some sessions are about telling the story of the person you lost. Others are about getting through a birthday, a holiday or the first spring without them. When a loss was sudden or traumatic, our therapists may use EMDR to help the hardest memories feel less raw, along with trauma-informed care and Internal Family Systems (IFS) for the parts of you that are carrying the loss differently. Learn more on our grief and loss counseling page.
When Sleep, Anxiety or Depression Won’t Lift
Sometimes grief brings on depression, anxiety or sleep problems that make everyday life hard to manage. In New Jersey, medication management is available by telehealth alongside therapy, so both can be part of the same plan when that would help.
Grieving as a Family
A loss changes a whole family, and everyone grieves at a different pace. Couples and family sessions by video can help when one person wants to talk and another wants to move on, or when children are struggling to understand what happened.
Insurance and Cost in New Jersey
In New Jersey we’re in network with Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare (including UMR plans), Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, AmeriHealth, Independence Blue Cross and Horizon. We do not accept Medicare or Medicaid. Self-pay is $125 per individual session and $175 for couples, family or EMDR sessions, each 45–50 minutes, and $200–$250 for an extended 90-minute individual, couples or EMDR session. You can verify your coverage before your first session. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and evening times can be arranged. Self-pay clients can also ask for a Good Faith Estimate before starting.
Questions About Grief and Loss
Is it too soon to start grief counseling?
No. Some people reach out in the first week, and others wait years. Either is fine.
I feel relieved my loved one’s suffering is over. Is that wrong?
No. Relief is very common after a long illness, and it doesn’t mean you loved them any less.
Can grief counseling work over video?
Yes. Many people find it easier to talk about a loss from home, without a drive afterward.
If You’re in Crisis
If grief has you thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any hour, or call 911. Therapy isn’t an emergency service.
