Counseling in Hilton Head, SC: Therapy by Secure Video
It is late August. The rentals have turned over every Saturday since May, the dinner shift ends after ten, and by the time the traffic over the bridge to Bluffton clears, neither of you has the energy to bring up the thing you have both been avoiding since spring. (This is an illustration, not a client’s story.) We do not have an office on Hilton Head Island or anywhere in the Lowcountry. We meet South Carolina clients by secure video only, which means home in Sea Pines, a parked car in Bluffton or a spare room in Beaufort all work, provided you are inside South Carolina at appointment time. Our two in-person offices, Wellington in Florida and Cary in North Carolina, are hundreds of miles from the island, so for Lowcountry clients there is no in-person option.
When you are ready, contact us or check your insurance. For Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort County we offer couples therapy, family therapy, individual therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy and teen therapy, every one of them on video. NRC holds licenses in 12 states (full list below).
Counseling in Hilton Head, SC, by Secure Video
Every clinician on our South Carolina team holds a South Carolina license, and that license reaches every county, barrier islands included. That is what lets us work with you on Hilton Head without an office there. You get a secure video link for each appointment. Bring a phone, tablet or laptop with a camera, a steady internet signal and a room where nobody can listen in.
One local detail matters more than people expect. Plenty of people on this end of the county work or shop in Savannah. Georgia is not one of the states we serve, so if you are across the river at session time, we cannot see you that day. Book the session for when you are back on the South Carolina side. The same rule applies during hurricane season: if you evacuate inland and stay in South Carolina, your sessions can continue by video.
Each session runs 45–50 minutes, and most new clients get a first appointment within a week. That first appointment is an intake, billed like any other session (we do not offer free consultations). Your therapist asks about your history and your goals, and the two of you shape a plan from there. Nobody can tell you in advance how many sessions it will take, and we won’t pretend to.
What Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort County Clients Bring to Us
Here is what tends to come up in calls from this corner of the state. Plenty of people call without knowing which item describes them, and that is fine.
- Couples stuck in the same argument, or drifting into living as roommates
- Betrayal and affair recovery, including emotional affairs and secrets kept online
- Family estrangement and disconnection, including adult children and parents who have stopped speaking
- Retirement, relocation and the empty nest, which are common reasons people arrive in the Lowcountry in the first place (our page on life transitions counseling goes deeper)
- Grief, including losing a spouse after decades together
- Anxiety and depression
- Trauma and PTSD, with EMDR available on video
- Teens, and children under 13, along with the parents worried about them
- Eating disorders, as outpatient therapy
If you are thinking about ending your life or harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any hour. If you are in danger right now, call 911.
Couples and Marriage Counseling for Hilton Head Couples
Everyone on our South Carolina team sees couples. All of our couples clinicians draw on skills from the Gottman Method, which looks closely at how you argue and repair. Katharine Kilpatrick, LMFTA, finished Level 1 training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which works on the fear or loneliness underneath a recurring fight. Level 1 is a training milestone; she is not EFT-certified, and we say so on purpose.
Island schedules are hard on couples. Hospitality and service work peaks in the summer, golf and real estate have their own seasons, and one partner may commute over the bridge while the other works from home. For South Carolina couples, evening video appointments can be arranged. Evening slots vary by clinician, so ask for one when you first call. Partners can share one screen or log in from separate places.
Engaged couples can do premarital counseling with us too. Csilla Hajnal, MS, LPC, LMFT, has Prepare/Enrich training; the program opens with an inventory that each partner fills out on their own. If you would like Christian faith to be part of the conversation, Katharine Kilpatrick offers Christian counseling for couples, engaged couples included. Our premarital counseling page covers what the work includes.
Couples sessions have a hard limit. If either of you is frightened of the other, or there is violence, threats, or one partner controlling the money, the car keys or who the other can see, joint sessions can raise the risk. Let us know when you call, and we will point you toward help that fits. In an emergency, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.
Not sure whether this is a rough patch or something more? Reach out to be paired with one of our South Carolina clinicians, or check your insurance first. You do not need a diagnosis or a referral to start.
Family Therapy, Teens and Children
Family estrangement rarely starts with one blowup. More often it is years of the same conversation going badly, until someone stops calling. Family therapy gives each person room to say what keeps getting swallowed at the dinner table, with a therapist who is nobody’s ally. Adult families can meet this way too, which helps when relatives are spread between the island, the rest of the state and a hometown somewhere else. Each person needs to be in a state where their clinician is licensed at session time.
We see teens 13 to 17 in South Carolina, and we see children under 13 as well. Any of our South Carolina clinicians can work with your family. Csilla Hajnal also uses the Nurtured Heart approach, and she treats eating disorders in South Carolina; when nutrition support would help, we recommend a nutritionist, since we do not provide nutrition counseling ourselves.
Military Families Near MCAS Beaufort and Parris Island
Beaufort County is home to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island, so deployments, PCS moves and long training cycles are everyday pressures for a lot of local families. Tricare East is in network for our South Carolina clinicians. Nancy Van Wyk, LMFT, LPC, works with military-family culture and trauma. To be candid about our limits, no one on our team is a veteran. If you want a therapist with service of their own, tell us early and we will help you look elsewhere.
Two Tricare points trip people up. First, a couples session is covered only when it is part of treating a diagnosed condition, which is why some military couples bill Tricare and others pay out of pocket. Second, an active duty member needs a referral to see a civilian provider. We sort out both ahead of the intake. On the verification form, the Group Number box takes your group number plus the sponsor’s active duty number, if there is one. Our Tricare coverage guide, along with our military and veteran therapy page, go further.
Part-Time Residents, Retirees and People Moving Between States
A lot of people on Hilton Head arrived from somewhere else, and some still split the year. With licenses in twelve states, a move does not always mean starting over with a new therapist. If your clinician is licensed in both of the states where you spend time, you can usually keep working together. Csilla Hajnal is licensed in South Carolina, New Jersey and Colorado; Nancy Van Wyk in South Carolina, Florida and Pennsylvania; Tamara Wright in South Carolina and North Carolina. You still have to be physically in a state where your clinician is licensed at the time of each session, and we will tell you at intake whether your plans fit.
Retirees should know one more thing before calling: Medicare is not one of our plans. If it is your only coverage, you can see us self-pay at the rates below, and we can give you a written Good Faith Estimate before you schedule.
Your South Carolina Clinicians
- Katharine Kilpatrick, LMFTA: Emotionally Focused Therapy (Level 1) for couples, individuals and families; trained in AEDP; Christian counseling for couples, including premarital couples.
- Nancy Van Wyk, LMFT, LPC: Internal Family Systems, including with couples; trauma; military-family culture.
- Csilla Hajnal, MS, LPC, LMFT: couples and premarital work using Prepare/Enrich (trained), the Nurtured Heart approach, eating disorder treatment.
- Tamara Wright, LISW-CP: cognitive behavioral therapy with a strengths-based approach.
All four are licensed in South Carolina, and all four see couples. On the first call our team asks what you want help with and pairs you with the person whose training fits it best. You can also meet the whole team.
What We Don’t Offer in South Carolina
We would rather say this here than at intake. We do not see clients in person anywhere in South Carolina; our Greenville address at 141 Traction Street is an office address, not an in-person option. We do not prescribe in South Carolina. Medication management is offered only in Florida, New Jersey and Colorado. There are no groups, and Medicare and Medicaid are not accepted. If any of those is what you need, a local practice will serve you better, and we are glad to say so.
What Therapy Costs, With or Without Insurance
Self-pay rates are in the questions below. HSA and FSA cards work for payment, and self-pay clients can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate.
Our South Carolina networks are Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare (including UMR plans) and Tricare. BCBS is the exception: we are out of network with Blue Cross Blue Shield in this state. Many BCBS members still work with us by using out-of-network benefits: pay at the session, we hand you a superbill, and you file it for reimbursement at whatever rate your plan allows. This out-of-network reimbursement guide covers the details.
Not sure what your plan pays? Send the verification form. The check costs nothing and does not sign you up for anything, and the reply usually lands in your inbox within a couple of hours. Expect a firmer answer for individual sessions than for couples, since insurers often tie couples coverage to one partner’s diagnosis.
Common Questions About Counseling in Hilton Head, SC
Do you have an office on Hilton Head Island?
No. Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort and the rest of South Carolina are served by video only. If meeting face to face is important to you, look for a Beaufort County practice with a local office. If your real obstacle is squeezing appointments around work and bridge traffic, video tends to fix it.
How much does counseling cost in Hilton Head, and do you take insurance?
Self-pay is $125 per individual session and $175 for couples or family sessions, each 45–50 minutes, and $200–$250 for an extended 90-minute individual, couples or EMDR session. Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare (including UMR plans) and Tricare are in network for South Carolina; BCBS is not, but its out-of-network benefits and our superbills can be used.
Can we do marriage counseling in the evening?
Yes, when arranged ahead. Couples in South Carolina can book evening video times; ask on the first call so we can match you with a clinician who has evenings free.
Do you take Tricare for MCAS Beaufort and Parris Island families?
Yes, Tricare East is in network here. Active duty members need a referral, and couples work is covered only as treatment for a diagnosed condition; we confirm both before you start.
Can I keep my therapist if I split the year between Hilton Head and another state?
Often, yes, if your clinician is licensed in both states. You must be physically in a state where your clinician is licensed at the time of each session. Tell us which states you split your time between, and we will look for a clinician licensed in each.
