ADHD Therapy and Medication in New Jersey, by Telehealth
You have three browser tabs open for the same task, a reminder for the reminder you missed, and a performance review that once again says “brilliant, but inconsistent.” You have tried planners, apps and sheer willpower. Maybe you were diagnosed as a child and stopped treatment in college, or maybe nobody ever put a name to it and you have quietly wondered for years. (This is an illustration drawn from what adults commonly describe, not a real client.)
To start, contact us or check your insurance. ADHD care in New Jersey is by secure video, anywhere in the state: therapy with our New Jersey therapists, and non-stimulant medication with Sima Alavi, ARNP, DNP, if it is right for you. It sits alongside our psychiatry and medication management, individual therapy, couples therapy and teen therapy services. We offer ADHD therapy in New Jersey, New York, Florida, Colorado and Pennsylvania, plus five more states (full list below).
Therapy and Medication Under One Roof
New Jersey is one of the three states where we can prescribe, so ADHD care here can include both halves: a therapist who helps you build systems that fit how your attention actually works, and a prescriber who evaluates whether medication would help. The two talk to each other, with your permission, instead of working from separate notes in separate offices.
You do not have to use both. Some people want therapy only. Others already have a therapist they like and come to us for the medication side. Either is fine.
Your New Jersey ADHD Team
- Sima Alavi, ARNP, DNP, a board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, handles psychiatric evaluation and medication management by telehealth.
- Lisa Abrotsky, LMFT, the founder of the practice, sees individuals and couples.
- Jodi Katz, LCSW, works with individuals, couples, families and older adults.
- Csilla Hajnal, MS, LPC, LMFT, sees individuals and couples, and uses the Nurtured Heart Approach.
About Medication: Non-Stimulant Only
We want to be clear about this before you book. We prescribe non-stimulant ADHD medication only. We do not prescribe stimulants. If you are looking for a stimulant prescription, or you already take one and need a new prescriber for it, we are not the right fit, and it is better to know that now than after an evaluation.
Non-stimulant medication is one option for ADHD, and Sima can talk through whether it fits you. Whether medication is right for you, and which one, is decided at a psychiatric evaluation, never assumed. The first evaluation takes about 45 minutes; follow-ups are shorter, usually monthly, and also by video. Our New Jersey medication management page explains how that process works.
What ADHD Therapy Looks Like
Therapy for ADHD is practical. Cognitive behavioral therapy gives you tools for the specific places your day falls apart: starting tasks, estimating time, switching between demands, and recovering after a deadline slips. Just as much of the work is about what years of untreated ADHD leave behind: the self-talk that says you are lazy, the anxiety that builds from always running behind, and the shame that makes asking for help harder.
ADHD also lives inside relationships. One partner becomes the household’s memory and calendar, the other feels nagged and managed, and both end up resentful. Couples sessions can help you split the load in a way that works for both brains. Sessions are 45 to 50 minutes, and there is no set number of them.
Wondering if what you are dealing with is ADHD, anxiety or both? Call (732) 734-6950 or send us a message. You do not need a diagnosis or a referral to start.
What We Do Not Offer
We do not offer psychological or neuropsychological testing. If you need formal testing, for example for school or workplace accommodations, we will tell you so and you can pursue it separately.
By Video, Anywhere in New Jersey
All New Jersey sessions are by secure video. Our address is 3495 US Highway 1, Princeton, NJ 08540, but there is no in-person option in New Jersey. Clients join from Princeton, West Windsor, Plainsboro and Lawrenceville, from Hoboken, Jersey City and Montclair, from Morristown, the shore towns and South Jersey. You need to be physically in New Jersey during each session. For people with ADHD, removing the drive also removes one more thing to forget.
Insurance and Fees in New Jersey
New Jersey plans we are in network with: Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare (including UMR plans), Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, AmeriHealth, Independence and Horizon. Medicare and Medicaid are not accepted. Benefits differ from plan to plan, so send your details through our insurance verification form and we will email you what your coverage looks like within a couple of hours.
Self-pay is $125 per individual session and $175 for couples, family or EMDR sessions, each 45 to 50 minutes, and $200–$250 for an extended 90-minute individual, couples or EMDR session. A psychiatric evaluation is $350, and medication follow-ups are $250. You can pay with an HSA or FSA card, and if you have out-of-network benefits, we will give you a superbill to submit. Self-pay clients can also ask for a Good Faith Estimate before starting.
